DUNEDIN, New Zealand -- The Western Force hung on with only 13 men on the field for the last 10 minutes to beat the Highlanders 31-29 in Super Rugby on Saturday. The Force had two men, including former Wallabies No. 8 Ben McCalman, in the sin-bin in the dying minutes of the match, but were able to resist a late Highlanders surge to post a four-try, bonus point win. The victory followed last weeks 32-7 win over the Melbourne Rebels, giving the Perth-based Force their first back-to-back wins since April 2011. Replacement flyhalf Hayden Parker scored a try for the Highlanders in the final minute but missed a wide-angled conversion which would have given the Dunedin-based side a draw. The Force have now won six of their eight games against the Highlanders since their admission to Super Rugby in 2006. The Force took a 21-16 lead at halftime after a first half in which the lead changed hands four times. Hooker Nathan Charles, flyhalf Sias Ebersohn and McCalman each scored tries to give the visitors the early advantage. Winger Junior Rasolea then added the fourth, bonus point try in the 56th minute, giving the Force a 31-16 lead which allowed them to weather the Highlanders rally in the last quarter. The home side fought back with tries by Parker and centre Malakai Fekitoa, but couldnt bridge the gap, even with the Force short on men. Ebersohn scored a brilliant try from an intercept and kicked five goals from five attempts -- four conversions and a penalty -- for a personal tally of 16 points. "Its going well," Force captain Matt Hodgson said. "I think were playing some good football now, starting games strong and, like you saw there, finishing it off with 13 men." The Force play the unbeaten defending champion Chiefs in their next match. The Highlanders were unable to put concerted pressure on the Force and defended poorly at times, allowing the visitors to pull away. "We probably didnt play quite the right footy in that first half," captain Ben Smith said. "We let in a couple of soft tries which came back to bite us a bit." ------ Western Force 31 (Nathan Charles, Sias Ebersohn, Ben McCalman, Junior Rasolea tries; Sias Ebersohn 4 conversions, penalty), Highlanders 29 (Shaun Treeby, Malakai Fekitoa, Hayden Parker tries; Lima Sopaga conversion, 4 penalties). DETROIT -- Stan Van Gundy has agreed to a $35-million, five-year contract to be the Detroit Pistons coach and president of basketball operations, a person with knowledge of the details said. Detroit gave Van Gundy the powerful combination of jobs on Tuesday, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced. The deal was first reported by ESPN.com. The Pistons announced in April that they were not renewing Joe Dumars contract, ending his 14-year run as president of basketball operations. Van Gundy is taking over a team that has Andre Drummond, one NBAs top young centres, and money to reshape its roster this summer. Van Gundy has a 371-208 career record with the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat. He was fired in 2012 following his fifth season with the Orlando. He stunned the Heat in December 2005 by resigning for family reasons after two-plus seasons. The Golden State Warriors might have wanted Van Gundy, who went to high school in nearby Martinez, California, to be their new coach. While the Warriors roster seems more attractive, Van Gundy is getting a rare chance to be the coach and decision-maker for an NBA franchise. Doc Rivers does both jobs for the Los Angeles Clippers. The Pistons are desperate to be regarded as relevant in the Motor City -- where theyve become an afterthought -- and hiring Van Gundy seems to be a splashy move they needed to make.dddddddddddd Ultimately, though, Van Gundy will have to win more than he loses in Detroit, as he has in each of his eight seasons. Van Gundy has won 59 games three times, once in Miami and twice with the Magic. He has helped his teams advance in five out of seven postseasons, leading Orlando to the 2009 NBA Finals. Miami lost to the Pistons in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals. Detroits season has not lasted longer than the regular season in five years, its longest playoff drought since 1978-83. The Pistons won their third NBA title in 2004, early in a six-year run of reaching at least the conference finals. The LONDON - Roy Keane has taken himself out of contention to be the next manager at Celtic and will continue as the assistant coach for the Ireland national team. The Football Association of Ireland released a statement Monday saying Keane "decided not to pursue informal talks that took place with Celtic any further." The former Manchester United player met with Hoops majority shareholder Dermot Desmond last week, but talks never reached the point of a formal job offer, according to the Press Association. Keane was thought to be the front-runner for the job, with former West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clark among the other leading candidates. Cheap Air Max 2019 . PITTSBURGH -- Josh Harrison got the game-winning hit and yet all anyone wanted to ask him about was how he wriggled out of that wild rundown an inning earlier. Harrisons double with two outs in the 11th gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night. "The rundown was fun, but the hit was more exciting because it meant the game was over and we won," Harrison said. Jordy Mercer hit a two-run single for the Pirates (41-39), who moved two games above .500 for the first time since April 10. They have won the first two games of the four-game series. Pinch-hitter Clint Barmes drew a one-out walk from former Pittsburgh reliever Vic Black (1-2) in the 11th. Mercer struck out before Harrison hit a drive to the 375-foot sign in right-centre, scoring Barmes without a throw. Harrison entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh and squirmed his way out of a long rundown in the 10th. The play drew an argument from Mets manager Terry Collins, who thought Harrison should have been ruled out for running outside the baseline. Harrison twice avoided a tag by hitting the ground and popping back up. "Like I learned in middle school -- stop, drop and roll," he said. Harrison eventually scrambled into third, putting two Pirates runners in scoring position with none out. Jenrry Mejia pitched out of the jam by getting two strikeouts and a fly to right. Black, acquired from the Pirates late last season in a trade, wasnt as fortunate in the 11th. Harrison and teammate Russell Martin each had two hits. Jared Hughes (4-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Lucas Duda hit a two-run single and rookie Travis dArnaud had three hits for the Mets, who played without seven-time All-Star David Wright. The third baseman was scratched about 90 minutes beefore the first pitch with a sore left shoulder and will return to New York on Saturday for an MRI.dddddddddddd Wright, riding a 10-game hitting streak, said the shoulder has been nagging him for a couple of weeks. "Any loss is going to be tough," said Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy, who had two hits. "Mejia did a great job right there that inning. Its a loss. Losses are tough. I dont know any other way to describe it." Neither rookie starter figured in the decision but both pitched well. New Yorks Jacob deGrom gave up two runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. Pittsburghs Brandon Cumpton allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. Cumpton is 3-0 with a 2.97 ERA in five June starts after giving up 11 runs in 3 2-3 innings on May 31 in a loss at Dodger Stadium. "He continues to go out there and compete," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He keeps going out there and getting things done." NOTES: Pittsburgh traded RHP Jason Grilli to the Los Angeles Angels for RHP Ernesto Frieri. Both pitchers were removed as their teams closer on May 20. ... Pittsburgh will activate RHP Gerrit Cole (6-3, 3.64 ERA) from the disabled list Saturday to start against LHP Jonathon Niese (4-4, 2.78). Cole has been sidelined since June 4 with right shoulder fatigue. ... Pirates LF Starling Marte did not start for a third straight game because of a jammed right middle finger, but he pinch-ran in the seventh inning and will likely start Saturday. ... Mets OF Chris Young went 0 for 5 in an increasingly rare start against a right-handed pitcher, playing left field in place of Eric Young Jr. Collins wanted to get Young in the lineup after he hit three home runs in two games against Oakland this week. ... Pittsburgh is 5-4 in extra innings. New York is 5-7. ' ' 'Pistons signed Josh Smith, traded for Brandon Jennings and hired Maurice Cheeks last off-season and were expected to at least contend for a post-season spot. Instead, the new players didnt blend with returning players such as Drummond and Greg Monroe well enough to push the Pistons into the playoffs and coach Maurice Cheeks lost his job 50 games into the regular season. Detroit finished the season with a 29-53 record and with John Loyer as coach. The franchise is hoping it has a lottery pick next month. The Pistons will have to give their first-round pick to the Charlotte Bobcats if the selection is No. 9 or later as part a salary cap-saving trade Dumars made to get Ben Gordon off the payroll two years ago.
